Year 2008-2009:This year I have taught 14 8th graders. Globaloria class was taught five days a week for 84 minutes a day. Sandy River Middle School students have chosen to concentrate on social issues topics for their games and created games on global warming, recycling, and terrorism. Next year, I will teaching two groups of 12 7th grade students for 42 minutes five days a week.
My most frustrating experience: Some of my students liked to "play" with Flash more than working towards the group's common goal. They did produce some great files following various tutorials that did not exactly pertain to their games even though they did result in the student subsequent learning about different aspects of Flash. It was very frustrating to try to keep them on task, so that the group would not suffer the negative consequences of unfinished games. I have used Jeremy's idea of group evaluation to create something similar of my own to get the students to evaluate their team members, which worked quite well and increased student motivation.
My most exciting insight: Realization that I don't have to be an expert in Flash to help my students succeed in this class. In the beginning of the year, I was really frustrated that I did not feel confident with Flash and that I would not be able to help my students if they had difficulties. However, after hitting the first serious roadblock with action script, I have relalized that it was more important to develop independent learning and critical thinking skills in my students rather than being an expert in the field (that, of course, would have helped too :). As soon as the first student figured out the action script issue, all other students learned how to do this within ten minutes. Power of social learning!!! The Alliance of Super Tr33 Stumps is a great example of group collaboration! http://www.myglife.org/usa/wv/srmswiki/index.php/User:Team_Alliance_of_Super_Tr33_Stumps

My Blog

Please discuss your personal teaching philosophy:

My teaching philosophy can be summarized in the simple statement by Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton, “The best teacher is the one who suggests rather than dogmatizes, and inspires his listener with the wish to teach himself.” In the 21st century, teachers are becoming facilitators of the learning process supplying their students with the skills necessary to compete successfully in the global job market. Lecturing in front of the passive recipients of knowledge is not an effective strategy anymore. We need to excite our students, let them believe they can be anything they desire, and help them become responsible citizens of the world.

I believe that only a person who loves keeping abreast of the newest findings in his/her subject area and finding new, exciting ways to teach what they know will give opportunities for the students to excel not only in academics. In my language arts classroom, I strive to provide the opportunities for the students to develop their academic as well as intra- and interpersonal skills. I consider myself not only a teacher but also a lifelong learner, and I expect my students to embrace life long learning regardless of the profession chosen as well.

I am not an ultimate authoritarian in my classroom. My teaching personality blends in humor, respect for individual differences in my students, as well as an expertise in the subject area I teach. My classroom management inspiration comes from my teacher of French who knew her subject perfectly, had an amazing sense of humor, but also let us know that there was no other choice but work in her class consistently.

As a language arts teacher and a person who speaks four languages fluently, I expect my students be not only proficient in the English language, but also realize its significance on the global level and strive to learn other languages of the world.
