Personal Information:

  • Meaning of your name:

My given name is Barbara. I changed it to Bobbi when I went to college 100 years ago because people never called me Barbara - it was always "Barb" which I hated - sounds like some tough thug.

  • School you represent:

Greenbrier County Schools - I've been a secondary instructional/literacy coach for two years. Before that I taught English (remedial through AP), reading and writing for 35 years in grades 6-12.

  • Role in Globaloria program at your school:

I'll be a support person for the two high schools in our county, Greenbrier West and Greenbrier East.

  • Favorite food(s):

anything Italian except snails; anything with sugar; anything with a tableful of friends!

  • Favorite music:
Eagles; Nora Jones; Enya, Toby Keith; Alanis Morrisette; Mozart's the Man!
  • Place in the world you'd most like to visit:
Paris and London; I'd go back in a minute. I love the "feel" of history there.
  • Hobbies and things you like to do outside of school:

Read, Watch mindless reality TV, Google everything, travel, take photographs and work on them in Adobe (I'm bad, but getting better at it - There's no time!), sit and watch my dogs

  • Educational or Social issue(s) you are passionate about:

Vocational Education - We need more emphasis there; Smile Train and Doctors Without Borders - Some human misery is so easily cured; Supporting our military - I'm not a hawk, but I have some strong ideas about our responsibilities there; Animal rights - I'm not a PETA person, but I'm a soft touch. I can't stand ignorance.

  • Favorite technology 'gadget' and why:

I love it all; I just don't have enough time to learn it thoroughly. I love my laptop and I-pod. I want a Kindle but I'm waiting for the price to go down and the quality to improve.

  • Describe when you started using computers:

We bought one for our kids 20+ years ago and I was hooked immediately.

  • Describe what you like to do on the internet:

Keep in touch with friends; Trace my nutty ancestors; Communicate with my grown kids (though they prefer texting); Get quick answers to questions

  • In what ways have you used computers in your teaching, previously?

For research, PowerPoints, filming and critique of debates, making presentations of all kinds, WritingRoadmap; Think.com; Marco Polo; Intelliboard, etc.

  • Why did you join the Globaloria program?

I learned about it at WVCPD Conference at Stonewall in February and thought it would be a great program for our county. I talked to the tech director and the principals who allowed me to survey teachers and promised to open up class periods to support it. I wrote out the application and hoped we'd get the chance to form a Globaloria Team. Now I'm looking forward to the whole experience.

  • What do you hope to achieve in Globaloria this year, personally?

I want to see some teachers and kids bloom as they collaborate and learn together.

  • What do you hope for your students to achieve in Globaloria this year?‎

I want them to realize the endless possibiilities that collaboration and technology can offer them.

Please discuss your personal teaching philosophy:

I've always been interested in allowing students to explore and learn while I stay in the background and provide what they need. Technology has provided a new venue for that. I've never liked seeing students in straight rows, sitting quietly in front of a pontificator. I like organized chaos as long as there is a valuable end product. I believe in challenging students to stretch and grow, even though it may be painful at times.
