PLAYING TO LEARN assignments
Pick two games you played before and write a review about each of them. Choose one professional and one student made game.
Make sure you include the following points in your reviews:
* Name and purpose of the game * Describe it from a learner's point of view and a developer’s point of view * Design Analysis (Does it look good? Does it clearly illustrate the scientific the concept?) * Usability Analysis (Is it clear what you need to do as a user? Does it work well?) * Suggestions for improvement * 2-3 things that you would like to learn how to do (in terms of functionality, design or content)
The two games that I picked are Dafur is Dying and Super toaster. The purpose of Dafur is dying is to go out and forage for water to keep Dafur from dying, but while you go and forage, trucks will try to catch you and take you to camp. I think the purpose of Super Toaster is to tell you about global warming. In the game their is a tree that goes by and collcts all the solar power. The Dufur is dying game looked very good because the students that designed this game got help by professionals. Dafur is dying meets the scientific concept because it has no gliches or doesn't pause so it does meet the scientific concept.Super Toaster looked good for students designing the game. super Toaster does also meet the scientific concept it has no gliches, but sometimes it moves slowley but it looks good for kids designing it.In Dafur in dying it is clear what you need to do as a user. You have to go out and risk your life to get water to keep from Dafur dying.Dafur is dying does work very well and I like the game.In Super Toaster it is clear what you need to do you are a tree that has to go across th road and you also have to collect solar energy. In Dafur is Dying I would make improvements when your in the camp I would make it easier cause when I played it I didn't know what to do. In Super Toaster the that I would make would be that I would made the game a little longer than it is and I would put more charcters in it. A few things that I would like to learn is how to put movement in the game.I would also like to learn how the game technology works
CHOOSING A TOPIC assignments
1. Explore Subjects, Topics and Concepts that Matter to You
- Brainstorm specific topics and concepts in each subject area that you want to explore in a game. Think about something that is really hard to learn. How a game can help represent this complex concept, and explain it in a playful and experiential way.
- Now choose ONE Concept to Focus On: ___Division___________________
- What are the most important facts people should know about your topic? The most important facts that they need to know about my topic. They need to know what all of the division signs look like, and they need to know basic math.
- What actions should people do in order to understand this topic? The actions that they need to do in order to understand this topic is that they need to read the directions that are given. I want them to do division problems and they should know what they do when they work my game
- What is a positive outcome that could happen if people learned more about this topic? They could now know how to do stantard division. The other positive outcome is that they should have fun and maybe that will make them like to play education games
2. Identify a Game Genre For Exploring Your Topic
- Genre 1: I want my game to play a role playing game
- Why I chose it: I chose this Genre because of the games that we played this is the genre that I liked the best
- Genre 2: I would also use the life simulation games
- Why I chose it: I would choose this genre because I would like for the people that play my game to think that their in the life of someone
