[edit] Getting oriented and learning Wiki commands

The Boulder-GameDev Wiki runs on Media Wiki software, the same software that runs the famous Wikipedia. If you need a brief introduction to Browsing, Editing, and Customizing your Wiki Pages, please explore the official MediaWiki Help Page

[edit] Upload a File/Picture

  • Use the "Upload File" feature in the 'Toolbox' section of the SideBar to locate your file.
  • Write a brief description, and click 'Upload File'. If you encounter any errors, click on the checkbox marked 'Ignore any warnings.'
  • Take note of any changes to your filename. The Wiki might change any spaces in your filename to underscores (My Favorite Picture.jpg will become My_Favorite_Picture.jpg)

[edit] File Upload error "..This file is bigger than the server is configured to allow. "

  • The limit on uploaded files is about 5mb....please keep your files (especially .FLA's) smaller than 5 mb. Also check the box "ignore all errors" -- that usually makes everything work fine.
  • If you think you know (or can figure out) how out how to disable the file size limit, ask Cami for Admin access, or tell her what to do.

[edit] Insert a File/Picture Into a Wiki Page

  1. Open the Wiki Page you would like to insert an image into. Enter "Edit" Mode.
  2. Click on the button above the text field that most resembles a tiny picture (hint: it's directly in the middle). It should produce the following wiki code:
Image:Donkeykong.jpg

Replace the words 'Example.jpg' with the exact name of your image file, eg: mypicture.jpg

  1. Preview or Save your Wiki Page.

[edit] Add Video to a Wiki Page

If you have the time, you can pair up with a friend and film a short video clip to post on your Wiki Member Profile Page.

1. Use a digital video camera to film a 1-minute introduction. See links below for instructions.

2. Upload the video to YouTube.com.

3. Embed the video into your Wiki Member Page by copy/pasting the code provided by YouTube into your Member Profile Page edit screen.

You'll need a free YouTube member login (sign up here).

[edit] Put a Flash Movie (.swf) on a Wiki Page

There's a 'wiki tag' for that!

First, make sure you have uploaded your .swf file to the wiki successfully. Just remember what filename it is called (example: Superflash.swf) and plug it into the following 'wiki tag'--

<flash>file=Superflash.swf|width=400|height=400|quality=best|bgcolor=#38475|scale=showall

You can change whatever options you want, or take them out totally. Click here to learn more about customizing your Flash movie.
